Dergin helped found this HipHop group in 1990... and they're still going strong! Creator of the original "Solo on Crutches" act for Varekai - and a very interesting man. Don't miss his "Artist Statement" or the videos! This site is wonderful! The proof section has some absolutely marvelous videos and explanations of his style. In the Whatis and 'definitions of phenomena' sections you get an honest exploration of the issues he (and all disabled folks) face both as an artist and as a person. I challenge you to read it all and not find yourself laughing... at his detailed and complex analysis of the stupid things people do (yeah, we've all done them) ...and at how silly we all are about what should be simple human interactions! A really great site! While the Solo on Crutches is a melding of styles, Dergin considers himself a break dancer first. This site is a fountain of information on b-boying: pictures, clips, info on events, moves... you name it! This page has a short history of the art of break dancing or "b-boying" as it is currently called. The "Battle of the Year" (BOTY) is a major international breakdancing competition. The goal of the event is bring together the best b-boy crews from all over the world in a multicultural event that is peaceful and non-racist. It has been held in Germany since 1990. One of two great Cirque du Soleil fan sites... This one is run by the author of Cirque Fascination newsletter... check it out! The other great Cirque du Soleil fan site... lots of good info and a good forum... run by one of the most knowledgable fans around. While not affiliated with Dergin Tokmak, this premiere dance company regularly uses both disabled and able-bodies dancers. Their site also has links to many other dance companies that use disabled dancers. Uli Schmitz, retired dancer and consultant to the company, also lost the use of his legs as an infant due to polio. He won the 1999/2000 Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Individual Performance.
